How long do fruit live: the life cycle of flies

Drosophila, also called the fruit fly, is a very small insect.

It can often be seen where there is rotten fruit.

Currently, there are more than 1500 species of fruit flies.

Drosophila development

For the entire period of life, the female of such an insect is able to postpone about 400 eggs in rotten fruit or any other plants and food.

If there are favorable conditions for its development, the larvae may appear within a day. For five days, they develop by feeding on microorganisms and, in the case of fruits, fruit juice.

Then the larva becomes a pupa, and in this stage it is still five days. After that, a young fly appears from the pupa.

REFERENCE The whole process of the appearance of Drosophila, ranging from the laying of eggs and ending with the release of a young insect, usually takes about 10-20 days.

When the young fly flew out of the doll, after two days it becomes sexually mature. The duration of its life ranges from one week to two months, usually it depends on the conditions in which it lives.

Living conditions

Fruit midges prefer wet and shaded places. The daily activity of flies is determined by factors such as light and temperature. The highest activity is observed during sunset and after sunrise.

In medium-sized regions, the fly most often tries to be closer to the person’s place of residence.

In large quantities, the fruit fly can be found in plants producing fruit juices or canned fruits, in warehouses with fruits and vegetables, in wine production and in wine cellars.

On the street, the midge can be found only in the case when the air temperature will be higher than 16 degrees Celsius.

High temperatures and humidity become favorable conditions., therefore at such moments their numbers quickly become larger.

In cold weather, the midges move to places with high temperatures. In urban apartments, she can settle on indoor flowers and in trash baskets.

Nutrition

In nature, midges feed on plant sap and rotting plant debris.. They can eat vegetables, woody sap, but the preference of fruit flies gives fruit.

In the southern regions, such an insect can often be found in gardens and in vineyards, since it does not bring any harm to the crop and usually no one fights with it.

At home, Drosophila eats decomposed products, therefore, they can often be found precisely in baskets with garbage. If you leave such insects without food, it will not take a week for them to disappear.

Where do fruit flies come from

Fruit flies lay their eggs on vegetables, fruits and other greens. Therefore, products purchased in the store may already be carriers. After the conditions become favorable, flies will develop from the larvae.

Midges can get into the house on shoes or pet hair. Sometimes in pots of flowers one can find whole nests of such insects.

REFERENCE The beginning of product rotting is a signal to active reproduction of fruit midges. In favorable conditions, such insects are able to reproduce up to a dozen and hundreds of individuals.

Thus, Drosophila is an insect that, under favorable conditions, is capable of rapid reproduction and development. Easily getting from the street to the house, the fruit midge finds food in rotten foods.
