Carrots "Samson": description, planting and care

Among the varieties of carrots that are popular in the domestic market, Samson is far from last. He attracted the attention of gardeners due to its good taste and excellent keeping quality. Let us and we take a closer look at the description and characteristics of the root.

Description and characteristics of the variety

Carrots "Samson" is the result of the work of Dutch breeders who managed to get a very good mid-early root crop. From shoots to technical maturity of carrots, an average of 110-120 days pass, although many gardeners harvest their first crops ahead of this period. The plant was included in the State Register of the Central Region in 2001.

"Samson" belongs to the varieties of the Nantes variety. It has a semi-sprawling rosette and green, half-dissected leaf plates. The cylindrical and leveled root crop itself is distinguished by a rather large size (on average 25 cm in length), a smooth surface and a slightly pointed tip. The color is the same as in many other varieties - bright orange. The head of the carrot is always flat, and the hanger can be both flat and slightly rounded. Inside the “Samson” a small orange heart, well connected with the pulp.

Did you know? The carrots boiled or processed by other thermal methods are easier absorbed by the body, because immediately after the procedure the level of antioxidants on it rises to 34%.
Fully ripe carrots will be on a level with the surface of the soil, reaching a mass of 125-150 g with a length of 16-30 cm. The largest specimens can show even 200 g.

On average, from 1 m² of plantings, it is possible to collect about 5-8 kg of ripe and juicy carrots, the yield of which is at the level of 528-762 c / ha, which is much higher than that of other well-known varieties "Nantes-4". At the exit, commercial products range from 91% to 94%.

The described variety boasts other positive characteristics, among which is a rather high seed germination rate (up to 80% with a rare sowing of 3 × 15 cm) and frost resistance of seedlings, even when it is -4 ° C.

Seeds of this variety of carrots give sprouts within a few weeks after planting, although the first ones will be visible after 7 days. At this time, it is recommended to carry out the first thinning.

Important! When growing the Samson variety, deformed or bifurcated roots are very rare, and their total number usually does not exceed 5% of the total harvest.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

In the case of this variety is easy to determine its merits, since they are clearly visible even to beginners in its cultivation. First of all, it is worth noting the following positive qualities:

  • high seed germination, due to high-tech methods of obtaining seed and avoiding unforeseen material expenses and time (usually, if the carrot does not sprout, you have to re-plant it);
  • almost the same size all fruits obtained as a result of growing, providing them with an excellent presentation (it is especially important for summer residents who grow plants for commercial purposes);
  • regular and stable harvestregardless of the region in which root crops are cultivated and the peculiarities of weather conditions;
  • good stability to the common ailments of the umbrella family;
  • few unsuitable root vegetables (poor, overwhelmed or partially spoiled);
  • good safety record, especially considering the average time of ripening of carrots (roots do not lose their presentation and retain their taste properties until the spring).
Important! If you are determined to keep the harvest until next year, put the carrots in large jute bags. Between the layers of root crops should be layers of dry onion peel. Filled bags should be tightly tied up and lowered into a dry, non-freezing basement in winter.
Unlike many other varieties of carrots, “Samson” roots do not rise above the surface, and all the time they are in the ground at the very socket. Thanks to this feature, their crown is constantly orange and never turns green.

If we talk about the disadvantages, then all that can be identified is the difficulty of buying seeds in small stores and their relatively high cost, although you can solve this problem by contacting online stores that send their goods by mail.

Cultivation

According to the manufacturers and according to reviews of many gardeners, the best carrot "Samson" will give birth on loosened aerated soil, different loamy or sandy structure. In most cases, the sowing of the variety is carried out in mid-spring, although in some situations it will be more appropriate to plant before winter, around the beginning of November, when it is already cold outside and the temperature has dropped to +5 ° C.

Among the common pests of carrots should be noted carrot flies, nematodes, wireworms, Medvedka, moles, aphids.
In the latter case, it is allowed to sow even into slightly frozen pits, sprinkling seeds with peat mixture or with humus (planting material is deepened by 1-2 cm with a furrow depth of 20 cm). It is not necessary to firmly tamp the soil, it is enough to compact and mulch a little so that a crust does not appear.

Given the fact that the Dutch seeds are characterized by increased germination, they need to be sown less frequently than regular varieties. Seeding options on a ribbon, in a liquid way, together with sand or seeds in the form of dragees, will work well.

If you perform standard thick sowing, then in the future shoots should be thinned, and after the second procedure between adjacent carrots should not be less than 5-7 cm, otherwise the fruits will become deformed and elongated. Repeated weeding will help to increase the heads of root crops. For good growth and development of almost any carrot, it is important to have an enhanced diet during the growing season, and the Samson variety is not an exception in this matter. This means that both watering and fertilizing should be carried out on a regular basis, and in order to keep moisture in the soil longer, it can be mulched with plant residues, straw and sawdust.

Care

Caring for a variety of "Samson" involves the same manipulations as in the cultivation of any other carrots, and the main components of this process will be timely watering and proper feeding.

Did you know? In addition to its other advantages, carrots also have certain healing properties, as they are able to increase the level of calcium in human blood, at the same time reducing the amount of cholesterol. That is why doctors recommend eating it for some hereditary diseases and diseases of the cardiovascular system.

Watering

The large-fruited carrot, which is the described variety, is very fond of moisture, which means that watering should be regular. In addition, to avoid the appearance of a crust on the surface, after each application of liquid, the soil between the rows must be loosened.

On average, watering is done every other day, and during especially obedient periods - daily. Two to three weeks before the root crops are harvested, the introduction of the liquid is completely stopped, otherwise the carrot will not be stored badly and will soon begin to crack.

Among the possible diseases of carrots should be wary of black rot, gray rot, powdery mildew, cercosporosis, rhizoctoniosis.

Top dressing

The variety "Samson" is recommended to be fed exclusively with mineral fertilizers, performing this procedure three or four times during the growing season of the plant.

The first feeding is carried out in June and involves the use of nitrogen compounds, and all subsequent ones require the presence of potash fertilizers. The last time the soil is fertilized a month before harvest.

Despite the fact that, in the opinion of many gardeners, organic mixtures lead to branching of root crops (especially when the chicken manure or mullein is excessively introduced into the soil), some summer residents still use them.

For example, diluted in a ratio of 1: 15 chicken droppings, plants are poured in June and July. Right or wrong - every summer resident can decide on his own, but do not forget about the excessive growth of green mass, which is quite common after frequent use of organic matter. At the same time, mineral compositions are focused on the development of the root system, and in this case the root.

Reviews

It is difficult to find a summer resident who, after growing the described variety, would be unhappy with the end result, of course, if the planting and care were carried out in accordance with all the rules. Almost all farmers and gardeners are united in their positive reviews on this subject, noting the high rate of marketability of root crops, their richness and excellent taste.

Basically, such carrots are used for making juices, mashed potatoes, all kinds of canned foods and other dishes, and due to the possibility of its long-term storage and fresh, you can use it for most of the year.

As you can see, the description and characteristics of the carrot "Samson" is a good reason to try to grow a root vegetable on your own plot, and when and how to do it, you just learned.
