Prices for onions in Austria beat records

The current season in most European countries is characterized by insufficient supply of onions, which leads to a record increase in prices and Austria is no exception here, said the report of analysts of the Ukrainian Horticultural Association (UIPA).

According to market operators, already now, Austrian farmers offer high-quality, sorted vegetables at a price of € 0.58-0.62 / kg, depending on size, whereas last week its value was no higher than € 0.60 / kg.

At the same time, manufacturers do not hide their intentions to further increase the price of onions, arguing that the depletion of its stocks in storage and high consumer demand. It should be noted that active purchases of onions are made by both Austrian companies and exporters, which specialize in sales to countries such as Poland and Germany.

Today, the price of onions in Austria is 3-3.6 times higher than in the middle of April last year. Most European countries are seeing similar increases in market prices for onions compared to last year. Industry analysts say that such a record rise in prices for onions is not surprising and it happened as a result of its low yield. The 2018/19 season showed the most minimal onion harvest since 2006.
