Can I get a harvest at home?

Yes you can. Many amateur growers managed, with some effort, to get a crop on the windowsill.

Favorable time for landing

Ginger can be planted on the windowsill at any time of the year.. However, you will achieve better results if you follow the plant’s natural life cycle. Try to keep within the span from the end of February to the end of April. Then the period of active growth will be in the warm and sunny summer months.

Are there special varieties?

In Russia, ginger is bred mainly by amateurs, there is no breeding work with this culture. There are several varieties of ginger, named for the place of origin. Most often on the shelves you can find the so-called Chinese ginger come from China and India with large rhizomes and relatively mild flavor.

Japanese ginger rhizomes are smaller and sharper in taste.. Within the framework of both varieties, different varieties are distinguished, but only a narrow specialist can distinguish them by their appearance. There are no special varieties for the window sill - neither in Russia nor abroad. Therefore, to find varietal planting material, especially - intended specifically for cultivation in a pot - the task difficult.

How to properly land?

Inventory:

  • ceramic container;
  • small blade;
  • flower pot or wide flat container;
  • priming;
  • drainage material (broken brick, expanded clay, small stones, crushed eggshell or dried tangerine peels);
  • transparent bag or food film;
  • spray gun;
  • children's watering can or bottle for watering.

How to choose a pot?

Take a shallow plastic pot or a wide low container, also made of plastic. Whatever capacity you choose, there must be drainage holes in it.

Which is suitable ready soil?

Take a soil mix for vegetable crops. It should be loose and light, and contain a large amount of humus.

Where and for how much to buy material for growing?

In Russia, it is almost impossible to find a material specifically designed for planting ginger in a pot. Ginger is rarely grown from seeds even in its native countries.

Almost the only way to grow ginger by yourself is to use the root purchased in the store (more precisely, the rhizome, a modified underground shoot, which is sometimes called root and root).

The average price per kilogram in Moscow and St. Petersburg is about 200 rubles. Choose a smooth, juicy rhizome with a thin skin. Well, if the kidneys - "eyes" - will be a light green color.

Procedure

Seeds

If you still managed to purchase seeds, you can start planting:

  1. calcine the soil in the oven at about 100 ° C for half an hour and let it cool;
  2. lay a drainage layer on the bottom of the tank;
  3. fill the container with primer;
  4. moisten it with a spray bottle;
  5. spread the seeds about 4 cm apart;
  6. sprinkle seeds with soil;
  7. cover the pot with a bag or film (no need to water the crops);
  8. put the pot in a well-lit warm place (for example, on the south side of the battery);
  9. make holes in the film so that the crops breathe;
  10. wait for seedlings for 2-4 weeks, from time to time opening the greenhouse for airing and spraying the soil from the spray.

From the root canteen

  1. Rinse the rhizome, put it in a ceramic container and keep it close to the battery ?, making sure that the air is moist and the rhizome does not dry out.
  2. Before planting, soak the root overnight in warm water - cut the root into jumpers, so that there are 1-2 eyes for each piece.
  3. Sprinkle the slices with crushed coal or ash, or rinse with a solution of potassium permanganate and dry.
  4. Pour into the pot drainage and soil, and lay out the surface of the prepared pieces of rhizome with an interval of about 3 cm.
  5. Powder them with soil, but do not fill the kidneys.
  6. Water well.
  7. Cover the container with plastic wrap and take care of the planting in the same way as for sown seeds. Shoots will appear in 1-2 weeks.

From sprouted store root

If you bought ginger rhizomes for culinary purposes, and the eyes on it swelled, and even green arrows and aerial roots appeared from them, do it as described above, but it is not necessary to withstand the root in heat before planting.

Further care

After the emergence of sprouts - both from seeds and from the root and root - follow the following rules:

  • keep the room at 20-25 ° C;
  • do not allow drafts;
  • water the plantings regularly, so that the soil does not dry out, but does not over-wet too - stagnant moisture is detrimental to ginger;
  • water the ginger with warm and soft water;
  • once every few days, loosen the ground so that oxygen is constantly being supplied to the roots;
  • place the plant on a well-lit window sill, but protect it from direct sunlight;
  • bi-weekly feed ginger with liquid fertilizer, alternating between mineral and organic;
  • if you notice the buds, immediately cut them;
  • to exclude fungal diseases, rinse the plant with warm (up to 40 ° C) water, rubbing the leaves with soapy water;
  • in the winter, take care of additional lighting, for example, with fluorescent lamps.

Harvest can be collected after 8-9 months.

Errors

Remember that fragments of rhizome need to plant eyes up, otherwise they will not ascend.

As you can see, to get a ginger crop on the windowsill is possible even for a beginner gardener. If you are lucky enough to find the seeds, sow them; if not, in almost any grocery store you can find a suitable rhizome. Now rush to the hypermarket for planting materials, soil mixture for vegetables and pots.
