Growing Instructions

Buy seeds. Seeds are sold in many stores, both specialized and in ordinary supermarkets. The variety is very popular among manufacturers, so the assortment is widely represented not only by Russian, but also by foreign manufacturers. Packing is standard - 3-5 grams in a bag, worth up to 50 rubles per piece, and wholesale - 100-200 grams, costing up to 300 rubles per pack.

  1. Landing time. At the end of April, when the weather is warm, it is already possible to plant this beet in the ground. When choosing a seedling method, you should start planting a month before the estimated start of the season.
  2. Choosing a landing site. Like all representatives of this type of vegetables, Detroit loves a well-lit place. Therefore, in advance it is necessary to choose a place that subsequently will not shade the trees. Due attention should also be paid to the wetness of the place, as this beet is also water-loving.
  3. Selection of soil. Medium-loamy chernozems and peatlands are best suited for vegetables, always with a neutral or slightly alkaline soil reaction. And also beetroot grows well when it is planted in the place of onions, tomatoes and potatoes. Carrots and cabbage are considered to be bad forerunners for her.
  4. Landing:

    • It should start with preparing the beds. If at the site there are heavy types of soil, then the beds are better to make bulk. This rule applies to all types of planting, including for the winter method. High acidity is neutralized with wood ash. The optimum bed height is 20-25 cm.
    • Next, you should prepare planting material. A few days before the planned planting date, the seeds should be soaked in any convenient way.
    • Planted beets under the scheme 25x10. The aisles make a distance of 25 cm, the seeds are placed at a distance of 8-10 cm from each other. Sowing depth - 2-4 cm.
    • After closing the seeds with earth, the garden bed is mulched.
  5. Temperature mode. The most favorable temperature for growing this variety is 15-20 degrees Celsius. The landing is done at 4-5 degrees, Detroit will survive and with short frosts. With drought, thanks to a strong root system, the culture will also survive. But it will be necessary to do daily watering.
  6. Watering. The variety is moisture-loving. For a good shoot is required abundant daily watering. During the growing season, they switch to the regime - once a week, at the rate of 15 liters per 1 sq. M. In dry days, they are watered daily, avoiding the appearance of a crust on earth.
  7. Top dressing. For the best result, one time in 2 weeks is spent feeding the beets with potassium. On 1 square. m. make 16-20 grams of potash fertilizers. After each thinning, seedlings are fed with nitrogen. With high acidity of the soil - do not forget to sprinkle the beds with ashes. And also for good sugar content of the fruit, salt is added to the water for irrigation.
  8. Additional measures. Seeds of this variety are stems from 3-5 seeds, which are formed as a result of flowers growing together. Therefore, even if the required distance is observed when sowing, the seedlings will still appear nests - and, therefore, it is necessary to thin out.

    • The first time it is done after the appearance of two leaves or when the seedlings reach 2-3 cm. The optimal distance is 3-4 cm.
    • The second thinning is carried out after the appearance of 4 or more leaflets, when the culture begins to actively increase the mass of fruits. The distance is at least 6 cm, optimally 8-10 cm.

Be sure to do a thorough weeding and loosening the soil after each watering.

Harvesting

Despite the love of this variety for moisture, watering should be stopped three weeks before the expected date of harvest. Cleaning should be done only in dry weather, in any case, without exposing the vegetable washing. It is enough to shake off the excess earth, cut off the tops and after a few hours remove for storage. Prolonged airing is not applicable to this variety.

Storage

Traditionally, beets are stored in a cellar or on a warmed balcony, in boxes or open sandbags. The optimum temperature is 0-2 degrees Celsius. Humidity is high. To achieve the desired mode, you can moisten the sand or put a bucket next to water.

During fruiting, beets are very vulnerable to many diseases, and although the Detroit variety is immune to many diseases, it can hit:
