Italian guest: Montepulciano grape variety

About this guest from the Apennine Peninsula heard in one way or another all. That's just what we know about him? In fact - almost nothing.

Here, for example, what does a variety have to do with the famous elite Vino Nobile di Montepulciano? Most will say that it is made from this wine. But no, this Tuscan drink bears the name of the city where it is produced, and by the way, from a completely different sort - Sangiovese.

Well, our "Montepulciano" - just, let's say, a namesake ...

What kind is it?

"Montepulciano" - technical table subspecies of red grapes. Used mainly in the bouquet of young red wines.Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.

Valued winegrowers for a rich tart fruity taste, unobtrusively sweet with sour and blackberry notes in the aftertaste.

The technical red varieties include Monarch, Baikonur and Relines.

Transport and storage makes well. Late maturation. Fresh is used less often - the berries are rather small, not particularly sweet, but with sour and tart notes in the bouquet and a tangible blackberry aftertaste, which not everyone likes.

Often used in homemade liqueurs, jams and compotes, but still the main path of this variety is wine.

Proven varieties for the production of wines are considered Krasin, Tempranillo and Muscat White.

Breeding history

Variety of geographical names. They grow Montepulciano throughout the south of Italy - mainly Abruzzo, Puglia, Marche, Umbria. In the north of the country almost never occurs.

He is very thermophilic, loves the south, will not tolerate the winter of the middle zone. Sometimes found also in Ukraine, Moldova, in the Crimea. In the world, this variety is grown in Australia, even the United States. In Russia, with the exception of certain areas of the south of the newly-acquired Crimean peninsula, there is no information about the cultivation of the variety.

Montepulciano grapes are also known by other names: Cordisco, Morellone, Primaticcio and Uva Abruzzi.

Among the heat-loving varieties, you should pay attention to Hadji Murat, Ruta and Gordey.

Specifications

Differs in regular and high-quality fruiting. Resilient to rot, rarely affected by bacterial cancer.

But weakly resists powdery mildew, both real and false (oidiumu and mildew).

From the wasp attack suffers little. Not afraid of spring frosts, rain. The yield of grapes "Montepulciano" is always above average, stable. Mandatory pruning for six to eight eyes, with a rate of 35-40 bush.

Diseases and pests

Wasps are poorly versed in grapes and almost all peck. Birds do not understand at all. Therefore, in both cases, the grapes will be saved by the nets — a tough shelter from birds, and we pack the bags from the wasps into special bags. They allow the fruits to breathe in the sun and wind, but do not allow the wasps to reach them.

All nests of striped aggressors must be found and destroyed; it is also useful to place sticky insecticidal traps.

Another weak point of the "Italian" - resistance to powdery mildewrather instability. This is a real nightmare of all growers in Europe. If you attack "not notice", the consequences for your vineyard will be disastrous. The antennae, young shoots, leaves, inflorescences are affected, and if the disease affects the berry, it will no longer be suitable for eating, nor, especially, wine or jam.

Vs mealy grew bushes process fungicides. These include Ridomil, Sandofan, Ditan M-45. Folk remedies, such as garlic decoction, are good, but are less effective than chemicals.

In addition to processing drugs, bushes need proper care. Feeding should be, but do not overdo it with fertilizers, where the percentage is high nitrogen and phosphorus. Also, the bushes should definitely thin out, remove unnecessary shoots and stepchildren, clean the leaves around the clusters of leaves.

As for anthracnose, chlorosis, bacteriosis, rubella and bacterial cancer, it does not hurt to take measures to prevent these diseases.

As you can see, "Montepulciano" - very capricious grade. Not only loves the southern climate, so also have to make efforts to protect it from fungi. But if you do not regret your efforts and efforts, the reward will not keep you waiting - the stream of customers wanting to get hold of elite red wine or seedlings will not run out to your estate.
