General characteristics and types of black geese (geese)

Farm geese growing is a fairly profitable business. Geese are very polite and self-respecting poultry that carry considerable value. Goose meat and eggs are a real delicacy, and their fluff is highly valued in many industries.

In this aspect, it is not strange that the goose farmers have a lot of valuable information about this breed and too often treat the geese as exclusively domestic birds. But do not forget the fact that nature provides a motley list of wild geese, which are better known in hunting circles. They are often called kazarkami.

It is interesting to find out how they house such representatives of birds: quails, guinea fowls, ducks, peacocks, ostriches, partridges, pigeons.
Let us try to understand in more detail what a goose is and to describe the features of the most popular species of this genus.

Canadian

Wild geese of this variety are among the most representative among their relatives. They walk, proudly lifting up a black head, contrasted with snow-white patches on the cheeks and part of the throat. White feathers are a reliable shield and the most delicate parts of the goose body: the lower abdomen and undertail.

Important! The length of the body of such a spectacular beauty is from 64 to 110 cm, and when flying the bird's body takes the form of a wedge. The average rate of its weight - 3 kg, but it can reach 5.5 kg.

The top of the tummy, breasts and sides of the Canadian geese are painted in dirty gray and chocolate colors that complement each other in waves. The wings of Canadian birds are marked with the same wavy, but dark brown shade.

As for the tail feathers, they complement the color of the head and neck - they are distinguished by a rich black tint. Looking at this fact, one could say that the Canadian goose is black from head to tail, but this is slightly wrong.

Canadian chicks have a special favor: they are tiny fluffy clumps of a delicate yellow color.

As for the vital activity of this species of wild geese, they live near water bodies, marshlands, where they feel great, both on the ground and in the water.

Regarding the diet, we can say that these geese are mostly herbivores and feed on what grows in marshy surroundings. But, they are not averse to eating fish or surface insects.

This species of birds is quite rare, so they are carefully guarded.

Did you know? Geese, like other representatives of this world, communicate in their goose tongue, in which there are about 10 sounds with accompanying tonalities. Interestingly, only the female utters the famous fairy tale "ha-ha-ha".

In the clutch of this variety, there are an average of 9 eggs.

Red-skinned

The red-breasted goose is brightly different from other representatives of a kind of original unique color. In her plumage red, black and white colors harmoniously reunited.

The head of this goose, just like the previous one, is painted in black and white, but the white spot is focused around the beak. The lower abdomen and wings also have a snow-white color, as opposed to black, like coal, back, tail and top of the wings. As for the breast and neck of this graceful beauty, they are covered with bright red plumage. Such an elegant outfit could not be left without proper evaluation. This bright beauty is known all over the world.

Did you know? Half a century ago, representatives of the Indian government were so amazed at the graceful beauty of red-breasted geese that they were ready to give a few elephants for a couple of such bright birds.

As for the weight of this species of birds, they are rather tiny compared to their predecessors. The weight of such a wild goose averages 1.3 kg with a body length of 53-56 cm.

Red-necked dwelling near water bodies, because such places are not only favorable for the life of adults, but also contribute to the easy learning of young animals to swim.

In the menu of this species of wild geese - only vegetation.

Black

If we compare the black brant with her relatives described above, then it looks pretty nondescript. When viewed from the front, it seems to be completely black, from the rear angle it is white. The black neck is decorated with a white round ring.

With a rather fragile appearance, the body weight of the black goose is 1.2-2.2 kg, and the body reaches a length of up to 60 cm.

The female of this species lays from 3 to 5 eggs, of which for 24-26 days it incubates tiny fluffy chicks, gray in color. The male at this time, as it may, helps his "wife".

As for the menu of black geese - they are hard vegetarians.

Did you know? Wild geese can rightfully be considered a model of loyalty. Birds are monogamous and do not betray their partner, even after death. If one of these "spouses" suddenly dies, then the second grieves and spends the rest of his life alone.

The hunt for this bird is strictly prohibited.

Barnacle

Barnacle Goose is a dweller of not only wildlife, but also the Red Book. Its description should begin not so much with the original color, but with the habitat. Compared to other members of the goose genus, it nests in mountain gorges and on rocks, hides nests in hard-to-reach places, prefers arctic habitat, tundra.

As for the color of this bird, it attracts attention with a delicate white feathering of the head on a contrasting black neck. The back and wings of the fair-haired beauties are colored red with a bluish overflow, which looks especially elegant when a bird flies. The belly and underhite of the white goose are snow white.

The adult bird weighs 1.5-2 kg, and its body reaches a length of 58-70 cm. They live in flocks. According to the diet, they also belong to vegetarians.

Did you know? There are always legends around this species of wild geese. Due to the fact that white-cheeked geese diligently hide their nests, almost no one knew the secret of their birth. Therefore, for a long time, people believed that representatives of the species were more fish than birds.

Hawaiian

The owner of not only a loud exotic name, but also a unique appearance, Hawaiian goose resembles ordinary geese more than anyone. But its wayward color, in which black, gray, white and brown shades are reunited, gives it a certain originality and zest. This brant is easily recognizable by a white and brown necklace around his neck.

With a body length of 55 to 170 cm, such a goose weighs 1.5-3 kg.

Important! The population of Hawaiian geese, unfortunately, is rapidly declining, and therefore they are listed in the International Red Book. In the wild, they are found on the Hawaiian Islands, and in our conditions are inhabitants of zoos. The average life expectancy of these birds in natural conditions is about 20 years, and in captivity they can live from 24 to 42 years, and the males live longer, the females often die during the breeding season.
Because of poorly developed membranes on their paws, the Hawaiian geese feel too bad in the water and spend almost all their lives on land.

As for breeding, these geese settle in the grooves in the ground, where from 3 to 5 chicks hatch over 29 days.

As you can see, the genus of ordinary wild geese, to which we are so used to, has many unique species with original descriptions. Their value is difficult to determine objectively. And our task is to preserve their natural diversity and contribute to its multiplication.
