Sugar shortage threatens the world

Due to the reduction in sugar production around the world, and in particular in the European Union, India and Thailand, a shortage of sugar is possible around the world. Reducing the area for growing cane and sugar beet affects global trends in sugar production.

According to experts, in October-September 2019-2020 sugar shortage will be about 4 million tons. The forecasts for Thailand’s account are as follows: in the upcoming season, sugar production in the country will be reduced by 10%, to 12 million tons. This is due to the fact that Thai farmers see the possibility of greater profits than in reed growing in other industries.

The situation with sugar in India is not comforting either. According to forecasts, the production of Indian sugar in the next season will be about 4 million tons less than expected. The reason for this is the deterioration of climatic conditions in India.

The consequence of the reduction of acreage of sugar beet in the countries of the European Union will be a decrease in the production of white sugar on the European continent.
