Basic rules for planting and caring for vervaina with photos

Verbena - a plant that is quite popular around the world. This article will be useful to those flower growers who have decided to decorate verbena flowers and their garden plot or balcony in the apartment.

You will learn how and when to plant seedlings and how the vervaina flowers look in the photo. Also in our article we will tell you how to grow a plant in the open field and at home, how to care for the lush and beautiful flowering of verbena.

How and when to plant for seedlings?

One of the most common ways of breeding verbena is sowing seeds with the aim of growing seedlings. The best time is the middle - the end of March. If sowing seeds earlier, then young shoots will need additional lighting.

Verbena can multiply by self-sowing, but this way it is impossible to control the varietal affiliation of the plant. It is better to purchase seeds in specialized stores or be patient and collect it yourself with flowers that have already faded, but in this case the question of preserving varietal traits will remain open. To do this, it is enough to carefully remove the verbena seed boxes, dry them and shake the seeds out of them. All manipulations should be carried out carefully so as not to lose seed that is shallow enough.

The algorithm of action when planting seeds of verbena on seedlings is as follows:

  1. Verbena seeds are placed on a moistened cloth or cotton pad, placed in a plastic bag or plastic container, and then placed in the vegetable storage in the refrigerator for 4 to 5 days. Or, before sowing, seeds can be soaked for several hours in a growth and root formation stimulator (for example, Appin).
  2. Prepare the substrate: should be loose, light and breathable. To do this, you can purchase a universal soil in the store and add sand and vermiculite to it. You can also prepare a soil mixture of your own: garden soil, sand and peat mixed in equal proportions. It will not be superfluous to treat the soil with a fungicide or a thermal method.
  3. Prepare a container for sowing seeds. The tank must have drainage holes.
  4. The bottom of the container is filled with expanded clay, then prepared soil.
  5. Substrate before sowing must be well moistened with a spray.
  6. Treated seeds are neatly distributed over the top layer of soil. Do not sprinkle them with earth!
  7. The upper layer of the substrate is moistened again.
  8. Capacity is closed with film or glass to create greenhouse conditions.
  9. Tara is transferred to a well-lit and warm place (not below + 25C).
  10. Every day, "greenhouse" must be opened for airing.
  11. Shelter can be removed after the final formation of seedlings on the 15th - 20th day.
  12. It is necessary to systematically moisten the surface of the soil from the spray gun, preventing it from drying out.
  13. After 4 to 5 true petals appear on the seedlings (8 to 10 cm), the seedlings dive: transplant each plant into a separate pot, while pinching the root for its future active branching and top for the emergence of side shoots.
  14. The young shoot is buried in the substrate (its composition is the same as for sowing) to the cotyledon leaves.
  15. Each plant is watered around the edge of the pot and is determined to a permanent place until it is planted in open ground.
  16. After 14 - 15 days, seedlings can already be fed with fertilizers with a high nitrogen content.

We offer to watch a video on how to plant verbena seeds on seedlings:

Outdoor cultivation

Verbena is planted in open ground seedlings.

Variety selection

For planting in the flower garden are suitable bush varieties of vervain:

  1. Verbena hybrid (Piches and Cream, Adonis Mango, Blue night).
  2. Lemon Verbena
  3. Canadian.
  4. Buenos Airesca, etc.

These varieties are erect bushes, the height of which varies from 20 cm to 1 m, depending on the variety. Multi-colored flowers of verbena effectively decorate the borders, flower beds and rabatki on the plot.

Time

To plant seedlings of vervain in open ground should be when the threat of spring frost disappears. As a rule, this is the beginning or second half of May (depending on the latitude).

How to prepare the soil?

  1. For vervain on the plot will fit well-lit, warm places, protected from drafts.
  2. In addition, this place should not be in the lowlands, as in such a case there will be a danger of permanent accumulation of moisture.
  3. The land does not require special preparation, it is enough to bring a little humus and peat before planting verbena on the site. In case the earth is heavy and dense, you can dig it up with sand.

Training

Seedlings do not require prior preparation for planting in open ground. But experienced growers recommend pre-hardening the seedlings: they need to be carried out to the open air for several minutes first, gradually bringing the residence time to several hours.

Instruction

  1. In the prepared area, the wells are dug at a distance of 20 - 25 cm from each other.
  2. A drainage layer is placed on the bottom of each (broken brick, gravel, etc.).
  3. In each landing hole 0.5 liters of water are spilled.
  4. After moisture is absorbed, a young plant, previously extracted from the pot along with an earthy clod, is lowered into each seat.
  5. The resulting voids are covered with earth.
  6. The seedling is gently pressed by the hands for better fixation.
  7. From above the plant should be mulched with rotted leaves, moss, etc.

Home landing

Sorta

For cultivation in pots, vases, containers ampelnye plant varieties are ideal:

  1. Imagination.
  2. Tiara Red Impr.
  3. Lenai Candy Kay.
  4. Moon River.
  5. Mammut.
  6. Mistm and others.

Their main feature is creeping shoots, the length of which can reach 60 cm. Falling stems, covered with lush inflorescences of a wide variety of colors and shades, look spectacular on balconies in hanging pots or pots.

Time

The best time for planting vervain in a pot is the end of April - the beginning of May.

The soil

The soil must be air and water permeable: garden soil is mixed with peat or vermiculite (perlite). You can purchase ready-made soil in a specialty store. Be sure to in the pot should be a drainage layer, which may consist of expanded clay, broken brick, river pebbles, etc.

Pot requirements

In the tank must be drainage holes that will not allow moisture to accumulate at the bottom. The pot should be spacious, but not too large, otherwise the plant will build up the root system, not the buds.

Most often, ampella varieties are grown in pots and vases, which means that you need to think in advance about the mounting system.

Extract

In order for the seedlings to be carefully and easily removed from the tank along with the earthy clod, it is better not to irrigate the young plant for several days, and the soil should be well moistened just before planting.

Instruction

  1. Prepare everything you need: capacity, soil, expanded clay, seedlings, watering can.
  2. The bottom of the pot is filled with drainage.
  3. The next layer is the ground, it should be filled up, a little before reaching the edges of the pot (it will be easier to water the plant).
  4. Grooves are made in the soil, in each of which plants are placed along with an earthy clod. To form a beautiful plant form, it is recommended to plant several rooted shoots in one pot. Their number depends on the amount of pots.
  5. The earth around each seedling is gently pressed.
  6. Soil should be watered well around the edge of the pot.

How to care for a perennial flower?

In the open ground

  • Watering.

Although the flower can tolerate drought, it is better not to experiment. The optimal irrigation pattern is once every 2 to 3 days, depending on weather conditions. The first time after planting, the frequency of irrigation can be increased until such time as the seedlings are fully accepted.

  • Loosening.

For the full development of verbena need air access to the roots. To ensure this will help systematically loosen the soil around the plant, removing weeds.

  • Top dressing.

For the entire season, top dressing should be done 3 times: the first - 2 weeks after planting in open ground, the second - during budding, the third - at the time of active flowering. The first time the plant is fertilized with nitrogenous fertilizers, the second and third time - fertilizers, which include potassium, phosphorus, manganese. You can feed the plant and organic fertilizers.

  • Crop.

To make a decorative form of the bush needs to be systematically pruned: dried inflorescences are removed along with a quarter of the shoot, carrying them.

Houses

Caring for a verbena, planted in a pot, is not particularly different from caring for a plant in open ground.

  1. Watering should be moderate, but regular: recommended frequency - after 2 days on the third.
  2. Verbena does not need to be sprayed, but it will not be superfluous to fertilize it. The application scheme for fertilizing is identical to the scheme for the care of vervain, planted in open ground.
  3. You should also cut off flowering buds to stimulate further active flowering.

Diseases and problems

In general, the plant is quite resistant to diseases and attacks of pests. But if the care of the plant will be carried out incorrectly, then certain difficulties may arise.

In case of excessive watering, the plant may rot or undergo a disease such as powdery mildew, blackleg.

To save the flower will be difficult:

  1. revise the irrigation pattern;
  2. transplant it, improving the composition of the soil;
  3. process the fungicide.

Or the plant does not bloom ... Most likely, the place was chosen incorrectly, since verbena loves the sun and needs enough of it.

Any gardener can recommend this unpretentious plant for growing on the plot. It will delight the bright flowering throughout the season, without requiring much effort to care for him.
